Important factors to consider when choosing Stirrers and Hot Plates for Laboratory use

Stirrers and Hot Plates are basic lab equipment that is found in almost every laboratory setup. These are used for diverse heating and stirring needs, and are available in different configurations with varying capacities and functionalities. Based on the use and expected functionality, these devices should be chosen well or they will not operate as per expectation. Let us discuss the criteria to use for selection of the right equipment.

Important factors for choosing Stirrers and Hot Plates

Stability and Precision

Basic analog heating and stirring units are reasonably priced and are reliable for simple lab operations. However, they do not provide high precision temperatures or speed control. When precise operations are to be conducted, it is ideal to choose units with closed-loop control mechanisms to improve efficiency of operation. Units with bimetallic thermostats will have better temperature control mechanisms inbuilt within the system. Hence, these are ideally suited for heat control.

Digital heating systems and stirring equipment are more efficient than analog units, since these can be controlled to a better extent. These systems involve microprocessor control units within the system that compensates for changes in the system and holds a specific temperature or stirring speed for a long time. Although this comes at an added cost, the reliability of results makes it worth the price.

Operating range and reproducibility of results

Different heating devices provide different temperature conditions. Temperature control will depend on the composition of the top plate, and hence should be a selection criterion. Ceramic plates are not recommended for operations that involve quick heating and chances of thermal shock. Porcelain plates have good resistance to corrosion and are thermally stable. However, they may be less reliable near the maximum temperature limit. Aluminium top plates offer lower sample visibility. However, they have temperature uniformity and are ideal for larger operational surface needs.

Volume, Viscosity and Environment

Since hot plates and stirrers come in different configurations and sizes, it is possible to choose the best system for specific operations. The efficiency of stirring a solution will depend on the drive magnet and stir bar combination. For viscous solutions, units with higher magnetic coupling strengths are recommended.

Since hot plates and stirrers are used in labs that perform different experiments, it is necessary to choose hardy and inert systems that are not prone to damage from common laboratory hazards. Explosion proof equipment will reduce chances of injury and will be inert to organic solvents and strong chemicals.

FirstSource Laboratory Solutions is providing Digital Magnetic Stirrers of Biosan, Neuation, Corning, Glassco, and 2Mag brands which are efficient in mixing highly viscous liquids. We also provides Hot Plates which are chemical resistant and maintain uniform temperature.
